Her crowning achievement, and what we believe was her greatest joy, was serving as the Official Live Mascot for Crystal Palace FC in South London. She ruled the pitch with grace and majesty, becoming the true queen of Selhurst Park. As she approached what would have been her 10th season with CPFC, she deserved nothing less than a testimonial match fit for royalty.
We remain deeply touched by the overwhelming support and kindness shown during our emotional announcement last year. Kayla's legacy lives on in every heart she touched.
Her journey began in Canada, where she and her sister were born. Tragically, they were stolen from the wild as chicks, though authorities later found and released them. Without proper hunting skills from their natural upbringing, they resorted to taking food from local communities. After a year, both eagles were recaptured and taken to a rehabilitation centre.
Their next chapter led them to The Ontario Veterinary College for educational programmes. However, as they matured, their strong personalities became too challenging for the college to manage. When Eagle Heights received the call asking if we could provide them sanctuary, we didn’t hesitate. Yet, during the complex paperwork process for these protected birds, Kayla’s sister was sadly put to sleep. Upon hearing this news, Alan Ames, our founder, immediately flew to Canada to protect Kayla and ensure her safe passage to her new home.
Under Alan’s care, Kayla finally found her wings at Eagle Heights. Despite her challenging start, she flourished into a magnificent ambassador for her species. Her fame grew steadily, culminating in her appearance on The Kings of Leon album cover and their fan magazine.
Her role as Crystal Palace FC’s mascot became her most celebrated achievement. After several spectacular flights through the stadium, she enchanted everyone at the club and was proudly named their Official Live Mascot, supporting the team’s Premier League journey. During our centre’s financial difficulties in 2015, it was Kayla’s devoted CPFC supporters who helped ensure Eagle Heights’ survival through their incredible generosity – a debt of gratitude we’ll always hold dear.
Sadly, Kayla’s journey came to an end when she suffered a fatal heart attack. We were utterly devastated to lose our magnificent friend and family member, but take comfort in knowing she’s now soaring free. The support we received from everyone who donated towards her treatment and care touched us deeply – your kindness and generosity meant everything during this difficult time. While our hearts still ache for her presence, we find peace in knowing that she lived an extraordinary life, touching countless hearts and inspiring thousands of people to care more deeply about wildlife conservation.
Thank you to everyone who was part of Kayla’s remarkable story. She may have left our physical world, but her spirit continues to soar freely in the skies she loved so much.
Eagle Heights proudly houses an extraordinary collection of over 30 majestic species. Beyond our renowned avian residents, we’ve evolved into a diverse wildlife haven, where you can encounter everything from playful Meerkats and graceful Servals to an array of fascinating mammals and exotic birds – each with their own unique story to tell.
